It may sound obvious, but when you travel you are physically away from your home. If your home is left unattended for any period of time, it is vulnerable to burglary, flood, or some other unfortunate event. There is nothing worse than returning from a great vacation to find your home ransacked or flooded. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to minimize the chances.
Regular Visits
Ask a friend or family member to stop by your home regularly to make sure everything is okay. An added benefit to these visits is that nosey neighbors will see activity and know that someone is around.
Stop Your Mail
A overflowing mailbox is a good indicator that you’re away from home. If you’re away for more than a couple of days, either submit a ‘hold mail’ request with the postal service, or ask a trusted person to gather your mail and hold it for you.
Invest In Security Cameras
Whether it’s Ring, Nest, or any other brand, a security camera can go a long way to provide peace of mind while you’re not at home. Today’s modern security cameras/doorbells provide an instant notification, excellent video quality, and broad coverage to alert you of anyone at your door or on your property. Prices start at around $200 per unit, and you may want to add more than one.
Shut Your Water Main
As the saying goes…sh*t happens. Although it is unlikely, a frozen pipe or weak connection can burst and cause a lot of damage. If you are traveling for extended period of time you may want to consider turning off your water to prevent a possible catastrophe.
