The travel industry is really getting clobbered by the coronavirus epidemic, particularly the airlines. Over the past several months I had my fair share of negative experiences with American Airlines, but to be fair, they should get some credit when they do the right thing.
American Airlines announced today it will waive change fees up to 14 days prior to travel for customers who purchase travel between March 1 and March 16. The offer is available for any of American’s published fares.
Technically, airlines don’t have to offer waivers because of the coronavirus. This announcement has some fine print and won’t help everyone. Nevertheless, some people will benefit.
If you have travel plans to an area affected by the virus, call your carrier and/or hotel to discuss options. It cannot hurt to ask for flexibility or a refund. You may even be pleasantly surprised.
