Effective October 1, 2020, you must have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or other approved identification to make it passed airport security. Normally we all carry passports for international flights, but it is common to just show our driver’s license to the TSA agent for domestic flights. We have to change our mentality. In a few months many of us will have a problem.
The REAL ID Act was passed back in 2005 to set minimum security standards for license issuance in all states. There have been several extensions to this Act, but the final deadline is fast approaching. The problem is that many of us are prone to procrastination and now the Department of Motor Vehicles in many states has a huge backlog. Make your appointment with your local DMV sooner than later to upgrade your license.
All is not lost, if you miss the October 1st deadline. You can still use your passport, passport card, or several other acceptable forms of identification listed on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.
