A Day in Dubrovnik

If this photo looks familiar, then you have either been here before or are a fan of Game of Thrones. This castle was the backdrop for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Yes, it’s true. A big reason why I decided to visit Dubrovnik was to see some of the epic sites from the HBO series. Like many others who visit, I am a huge fan.

Dubrovnik is a city in southern Croatia on coast of the Adriatic Sea. Its Old Town is encircled by massive stone walls, and walking along the top of them is the main tourist attraction. My wife and I took an HBO, Game of Thrones tour and learned not only about the series, but much about Dubrovnik itself.

We spend about 90 minutes walking along the Walls of Dubrovnik. This is definitely a must do should you visit. You get amazing views of the entire city from this perspective.

As the story goes…it just so happens that two HBO, Game of Thrones producers were on a short vacation in Dubrovnik just before the series began filming. The city was never on their radar. They fell in love with this place and sent over location scouts to research Dubrovnik for the new series. The rest is history.

City of Dubrovnik

Once the GOT series became a hit, tourism in Dubrovnik soared. This city is just gorgeous, and it is easy to see what draws people here. Because of the climate and its position on the Adriatic sea, summer is the peak tourist season. The city does its best to accommodate everyone, but many locals find the crowds overwhelming. Unfortunately, Dubrovnik has become one of many cities, like Venice, that fell victim to their own beauty.

Bottom Line

Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful. I found the locals to be friendly and welcoming. Since my visit was during the off peak season, the crowds weren’t an issue. I should point out that Dubrovnik is expensive, especially in the Old Town. Most of the locals shop and eat outside of the city, but tourists are forced to pay a premium. However, it isn’t so expensive as to preclude you from visiting. If I had more time I would have loved to explore more of Croatia. Until then…
